Credit insurance (including credit life, credit disability, credit unemployment, or credit property) is sold in connection with a consumer loan. Siblings of credit insurance—which is not regulated as insurance—are debt cancellation, payment protection, debt waiver, or debt suspension. Credit insurance and payment protection products are low-value products that strip, instead of preserving, consumer assets. Credit insurance and payment protection have a history of consumer abuses. For more than two decades The Center for Economic Justice has led the fight against abusive credit insurance practices at both national and state levels. CEJ has authored or co-authored numerous reports on credit insurance abuses and testified in many states to stop these abuses. Through our work, consumers in many states have seen tens of hundreds of millions of dollars of savings.
